Fire/Glow Performance Group?

Are there any existing fire conclaves/poi performace groups in DFW? I am kinda interested in joining up with a group who spins for fun and occasional profit.

I work for a public library, and this summer many libraries in Texas are looking for poi spinners since "Glow Poi" is a suggested program (Texas State Library gives ideas like that!). Anyway, I am doing a program for the libraries in Plano, but I'd love to branch out with a group and provide a great show for people across the metroplex (and maybe even all over Texas if it's lucrative). Let me know if there is a group I can contact, or if you'd be willing to establish a group with me.

Oh, and I am at an intermediate level with poi... I've actually not done fire yet, but after six months of spinning poi, I am advancing pretty quickly and practicing my arms off. I'd love to have opportunities to show off my new talent to people other than my cats!

Fire - Belly Dance - Drumming - Henna - MORE ... 3rd Coast Tribal - Jan 2008

Greetings - We are bringing some great talent to your city.... 4 days of classes and shows and more! We'd love to see some of the north Texas fire folks out here! As I only get to run into some of you at Flipside each year.... and yes there will be a fire performance!

To stay on the topic of fire... let me say we are offering some fire classes with Lorelei ...a featured member of Empyrean Fire Tribe.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lorelei is a diverse artist whose talents include fire poi, belly dance, and videography. Based in her hometown of Houston, Texas, Lorelei began her performance career in high school and community theatre.In 1999, friends introduced Lorelei to the art of poi spinning and it wasn't long before she became a featured member of Empyrean Fire Tribe, creating unique fire performances for Six Flags Astroworld (2003) and the Texas Renaissance Festival (2004). She also became a sought after instructor, developing a curriculum and methodology for teaching poi that she has refined over time. Lorelei began her belly dance career at Sirrom School of Dance in October of 2000. Since that time, she has made numerous cherished friends within the dance community and has performed regularly at festivals, clubs, parties and restaurants throughout the Houston area. She has studied with a variety of instructors in workshop, and assisted Sahira with the creation of her Arabian Spices DVD. Lorelei currently dances with her troupe, DaGlitter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Class topics...
Fireless Poi Spinning - Basics and Moving with Poi
This class will introduce the six basic underlying rotations in poi spinning and the standard tricks derived from each of them. We will also study transitional tricks which will allow us to begin to move freely with the poi.

Fireless Poi Spinning - Intermediate Tricks & Layering Dance Moves
The student should bring a working knowledge of poi spinning to this class. We will begin by focusing on intermediate tricks, transitions, and postures to enhance your performance. We wil then pay special attention to those tricks which can be adapted to allow the integration of dance movement.

All the classes are listed here....

Ok so I make poi locally and most of the work I do is custom requests... I just made a pair of keychain sized cathedrals for one of the people in my burn group. They are 1 inch cubes and look exactly like the real things, blind rigged and all.. Then i attached them to a dog chain with an S-hook (cuz quicklinks are too big.. haha) and then you can just spin them if you want to do a quick burn. They make really pretty flames and fit in your pocket! They are so small you can even eat them. hahah! Anyways I thought I'd share the idea. They are my new favorite poi! Its a nice break from the huge poi I usually make.

Draco Pendragon here.I have a club gig here that I cant fill due to schedule conflicts. They want between 1 and 5 fire performers that can perform in an adult venue. No nudity but its an adult venue.Any acts that have an erotic edge with fire. The club is called Iniquity and its in Dallas. This gig will definately lead to others as the entertainment coordinater is the person you will be dealing with. The gig will cover expenses and perhaps more but I will let you work that out with the club if any can fill the venue.Let me know soon.Thanks........Draco Pendragon.......Patrick

Be SAFE!!!

How many of you are absolutely rigid when it comes to preserving your personal safetY? How many of you:

* will not under any circumstances perform without a spotter
* use both a towel and a fire extinguisher when spinning (and make sure at least one person other than yourself knows how to use it)
* physically rope off / barricade access to your fuel and spinoff area
* always wear appropriate clothing / secure hair

I've seen so many people who are new to this not doing the above, particularly spinning without a designated spotter or even bringing a stupid towel! So here's a sad story for you, which took place right here in Dallas. I perform sometimes with a hula dance troupe and they have a guy who does a Polynesian fire knife dance. He had no designated spotter, no towel, a costume that included raffia grass tied around his arms and legs, and a fire extinguisher that he kept in his bag (and which no one else knew about). The leader of the hula troupe wrote to me today:

"He was walking offstage with his fire knives after the performance when the wind caused the fire to catch the raffia on his legs on fire. When he tried to put it out it caught the raffia on his arms as well. He got a 3rd degree burns in both hands and legs. He's had to get skin grafts in both places. He is back to walking now but can't still use his hands. He was new to performing, so I guess he hadn't learned the precautions. Afterwards we found his fire extinguisher in his bag instead of near him. And I think he should have turned off the fire before he walked off the stage. But we are just glad he is alive. It was so scary. he didn't give any instructions to us in case something happened, so we just panicked and didn't want to come near him because we were wearing the raffia skirts too. That was my suggestion to him not to wear those, but since he was pretty new in this in didn't make sense to him."

I'm really sad because I saw this guy perform before the accident (as a dancer, not a fire performer) and he was just awesome - this big funny white guy in the middle of all these little Polynesian girls. Tragic that he neglected the safety basics or didn't have anyone to tell him what they were. Personally, I'm going to start ragging on people. I used to just ignore fire performers who acted stupidly - hey it's their choice - but really the stakes are too high. It could literally mean someone's life.

So here I am - buggin ya. Please make a list of safety procedures and make it inviolable. I've been lax myself lately, but no more.

After Burningman

was thinking about (After Burningman is over) reorganizing and turning creativity in motion into a monthly (or so--depending on what everyone is interested in) Jam. The details are up in the air...but it could be a sort of spin/drum jam that moves around to different parks/hosts, etc....with maybe a potluck attached. I learned a lot from the first spinfest and I'm sorting that info in my head...but I really want to put something together that occurs on a regular basis. I would just like some feedback on the idea.

Let's talk it into action...

There has to be another way....

Ok...so here's the deal...I'm frustrated.

Fire...I love it, I respect it's power and I'm in awe of the passion it inspires within me.

I know I'm not ready to light up...I'm still very much a fledgling...That's what I've come to call myself--a Fire Fledgling--however, I don't feel like I'm really on the path forward. I'm part of a fire group...but I don't feel like I'm on my way to fire--or really learning much. I haven't even really learned to tech/safety (I've pretty much got it figured out just from watching and being around it...but I want to start from the very bottom and really learn)

I'm Hooping--that's on my own, and though it's my passion and truest love...it's rather slow-go because I don't have anyone to work with on it...I'm working on poi with my boyfriend (I don't ever see that being a strength with me, but I'm trying, who knows, maybe I'll surprise myself). I am supposed to be working on fans with the leader of our group (my roommate), though we've not budged past bringing fans back to the house from East Texas. I also want to test out staff---and honestly...there isn't a skill toy out there that I don't want to atleast tangle my fingers in a bit. I want to see where my strengths lye. There has never been anything in my life that has latched hold of my soul like the world of fire and skill toys and I want very much to embrace it with this hungry love I have for it. I'm an artist through and through--and the way that I've been inspired....well that's a seperate post all together..perhaps an entire novel.

I know things have been rather chaotic in our group recently, but that is generally the "norm" for us. I guess I'm frustrated because of how stagnant my own progress feels. Nothing has gotten past "Wow, when we give Miranda Fire that'll be sexy as hell" ...or "Damn she'll look good with fire" or "Just think of what she'll do with fire..." or "When we give Miranda fire...[ect]." and, knowing this bunch...it won't happen unless I MAKE it happen. Apparently it's on everyone's mind...but that's where it will stay until it's before their eyes as well.

I'm the kind of person that, if I really want something, I will try every door in the hallway until one budges and sets me back on my way to achieving my goal (and sometimes ya just gotta pick a lock or two--ahem). I get very frustrated with my friends and their uncanny lack of motivation--or atleast their consistant pattern of saying they want something and waiting months and months before they finally work to achieve it [haphazardly]. I love them all so very much, but I can't stand this--for my own journey.

So here comes the point-- The gypsy is walking down this long corridor and carefully trying each door, do any of them open? I'm longing for teachers, mentors, anedotes, friends, etc, etc.

I just feel so....lost.

2 Fire Dancers needed in New Orleans for 9/8/07 show

my very wonderful and amazing friend is chairing a scholarship/grant charity benefit for the arts in New Orleans on 9/8/07.

she desperately needs two fire dancers.

while there is no pay for the performance being that it is a charity benefit, you will get free room and board for the weekend, as well as be able to have a great time seeing all the many different kinds of performers that will be there, and receive a load of appreciation from those hosting the event. i'd go myself if i was better than my current amateur status.

if you or anyone you know may be interested, please message me and i will send you her contact info.

thank you!

These folks would be wowed by amateurs practicing. They'd be gaga over seasoned BM poi spinners. If you want a place to try out your routines in front of a live audience, this is the place.

Sept 15-17th SpinningTime & Amok's Workshop

Not tired of camping/drumming/spinning yet??? Put it on your calendars now for a trip to Alchemy's Alcove on Sept 15-17th. You are welcome to join us Friday evening if you want to get in an extra night of camping. Just let us know so we can wait up for you :)

In addition to our regular SpinnngTime, we will also be hosting a workshop in building with ferro-cement. We will have extra gloves for those wanting to participate (it's not mandatory).

Bring your drums and since it has rained on us this last weekend and supposed to rain this next weekend (and probably the next as well), don't forget your raingear and mudboots. LOL

Amok has been working with a backhoe and has put in three culverts on the property and a ditch along the road to divert rain water from the front fields to the ponds. Watch the road carefully so you don't slip off into the new ditch on the north (left) side of the road coming around the corner to the Alcove.

I like fire.

I used to think poi was gay. I also used to get hit in the head with glow sticks a lot.

I used to resent all the space that was taken away on the dance floor. I could get nasty.

Then I witnessed the same annoying task performed with fire. It was exciting, dangerous, and somehow didn't piss me off when I had to move out of the literal line of fire. I watched. I studied. I attempted with scarves, and even once with *eek* glowsticks (don't want to just go right into burning myself right?)

Anyhow I have never learned what I'm doing, but I'm often asked if I spin fire when I perform with netting or scarves. Sadly, my answer has always been the same.

Well folks, the fire obsession grows (does everyone start out this way?) I need to learn, and I figure this is as good a place of any to start. I'd dive right in myself, but after the former Miss Firepants burned off her own pants last year, some much needed respect for the flame must be learned. I'd like to say that that statement was a metaphor. So I'll just say I like cheese instead. Pepper jack.

*Insert obligatory I'm new here and would like help getting into this craft here*

I'm fun. You will have fun helping me. I like coffee, sarcasm and captive audiences. You don't hate fun or captives do you? Good then email me...

firedancers- July 8th, Dallas, TX

How do I get some firedancers to a party July 8th for an hour or so to perform and then stay to party? Come hang out with my sister Erin and a few hundred of her closest friends all day at Martinis and Bikinis, which is her and her friend, Jamie's, annual B-day party. The party is in some major need of a few burners in my POV. I think it'd be fun and free-beer/liquor if you like that sort of thing?

I'd also like to trade firedancing lessons for modeling (dude i have no other skillz, but i can sit still for hours while meditating about my existance in excrutiating pain). Are there any portrait/figure artists out there in need of a model? An hour for an hour or something like that a few Saturdays this summer would be wonderful. I can, will and do dance like a banshee- I just need to add fire...

Let me know! To those in the know: Post this wherever it needs to go, I'm still a relative tribe virgin...
Cara

My mother-in-law is moving and cannot keep her dog. Unfortunately, the terms of our lease prevent us from taking him in.
He is not a pretty dog, but very sweet and good with kids. However, he does not get along well with other dogs, so he cannot go to someone who already has a canine friend-in-residence. He does fine with cats, though.
I would hate to see this sweet, affectionate, mellow guy have to go back to the shelter he was already saved from once.
If anyone can help, let me know, please.

I need to decompress, but I need to do it in Dallas.
Is there anything planned?
If you are interested in getting together at Lee Harvey's, let me know so I can get with the manager to set something up, hopefully for this weekend.
Saturday night will be better because they just have a DJ that night. We will probably be able to tack stuff on to that.

Puck started this thread on the dallasFire email list (dallasfire@yahoogroups.com) and I wanted to share the discussion here as well (thank you Puck!)........

this is music to my ears!
let's do it.

It would be so nice to be able to share & learn with each other.

I don't know about everyone else, but MOST of what I've learned about poi and staff and fire handling has been online...which is wonderful, but it's nothing like actually having a local, in-the-flesh community where we could learn from each other...and inspire each other, and help each other get better, and even take it all to the next level!

Any ideas on where?
Public or private?
Someone's yard or public park?

(My boyfriend and I live in a house in an art friendly neighborhood in East Dallas. We have a fairly big backyard that can't be seen from the street.)

Anyone else have a house?
Maybe we can alternate locations.

Also, we can practice in a public park with l.e.d.'s or 'blinkies'... White Rock Lake might be nice.

Monthly? Weekly?

Peace
-Jamie

*****

If this group keeps growing we really may need to start setting up practice locations and shit. I know every one probably would like to do a meet and great ....or show off to others. ;)

Fire Fan Deigns- What's your favorite?

Hello All.
I'm trying to decide which type of fire fan is the best 'all-around' design.

I'm looking for a beautiful design that has strength and is good for, not only basic movements, but also spins and throws.

I would gladly welcome any words of wisdom and suggestions on design, movements, tricks, etc, as well as the pro's and con's of certain styles of fan.

The fan designs I've seen and liked are:

irongypsy.com/fan/sunfan.htm

irongypsy.com/fan/bigfan.htm

www.homeofpoi.com/shop/prod...etails.php/fire/104/poi/33/detail/Large_Fire_Fans

fire-gear.com/fans.php

www.firewhip.com/fans.html

Many thanks for your opinion.

hello every body! ...and an invite

I just joined the tribe... my name is Jamie.
I'm so glad to find a dallas group interested in fireplay.

I just want to put out an invite....
I plan on going the the "Across the Street Bar" Psychedelic drum-jam this wednesday evening. The owners of the bar allow / encourage fire performers to come out and do our thing (provided we exercise caution, etc). The jam is held outdoors, weather permitting, so it's perfect for fireplay and dancing under the stars. The outdoor area is quite large, so there's plenty of room for fuel, and spin-off away from everyone.

the address is: Across the Street Bar, 5625 Yale Blvd Dallas, TX 75206
Phone: (214) 363-0660
$3 cover charge
9:30 - 1 am

Come and PLAY with us!
Namaste'
